Southern tip of the Delta

Federal naval and military forces captured post
after post along the Mississippi until by late
summer of 1862 only Vicksburg and
Port Hudson remained. Of the two
Vicksburg was more important.

Vicksburg National Military Park

Command of this waterway would allow uninterupted passage of Union troops and supplies into the South and isolate regions the Confererates depended heavily upon.

On July 3 1862 after 46 days under seige
Vicksburg officially surrendered.

From Vicksburg we went over the bridge into Loiusiana
